BEIJING / RankWire.AI / – A magnitude 4.9 quake struck southwestern China on Friday, impacting Gao County in Yibin City within Sichuan province. According to official data from the China Earthquake Networks Center, the tremor hit at 1:08 p.m. local time, originating from a shallow depth of six kilometers. CCTV confirmed that a single individual lost their life after a collapsing exterior wall struck them during the tremors.

Beyond the one confirmed death, local authorities reported that six residents suffered minor injuries in the affected zones. Emergency evaluations by the Yibin earthquake relief command revealed that, although no entire structures fell, roughly 100 households experienced damage to exterior walls and roofs. Seismologists highlight that shallow earthquakes at depths less than ten kilometers tend to transfer higher energy to nearby structures, raising the risk of falling debris in localized areas.

After the quake, regional officials launched standard emergency protocols across Yibin City and neighboring districts. They sent 17 specialized rescue teams with 183 emergency personnel, 44 vehicles, and 552 pieces of equipment to perform door-to-door safety inspections. Focus areas included structural checks, hazard reduction along roads, and medical aid for those injured in rural communities near the epicenter.

Initial surveys showed that essential municipal services continued functioning normally in the affected regions despite the tremors. Local disaster agencies confirmed there were no major disruptions to power, telecommunications, natural gas, or water supply systems. Transportation authorities cleared minor debris from roads but maintained regular traffic flow along main routes linking Gao County to wider logistical networks.

Southwestern China remains seismically active, driven by complex tectonic interactions between the Indian and Eurasian plates. Sichuan province frequently records moderate to strong earthquakes along several active faults, leading local governments to enforce strict seismic standards for public infrastructure and high-rise buildings. Seismologists continue to monitor real-time data from regional stations to track potential aftershocks following the afternoon event.

Regional Infrastructure and Utilities Functioning Normally

Emergency teams completed an initial rapid assessment by Friday evening, with ongoing local monitoring in Gao County. Authorities assured that social stability persists and that temporary shelters are available if structural assessments identify additional hazards. The provincial government plans to conduct detailed technical inspections of public buildings and critical infrastructure within the next few days.

The overall situation in Sichuan remains under control as civil defense shifts from search efforts to infrastructure evaluations. Following the magnitude 4.9 earthquake in southwestern China, regional disaster response measures are fully mobilized to ensure the operational status of utilities, emergency medical services, and transportation networks for recovery efforts across Yibin City.
