MUSCAT, OMAN / RankWire.AI / – Oman’s overall electricity generation increased by 4.3% year-on-year through August 2026, reaching 37,481.8 gigawatt-hours. During the same period in 2025, output was 35,935.3 GWh. Data from the National Centre for Statistics and Information indicated growth in multiple governorates, contributing roughly 1,546.5 GWh to the total for the first eight months. In August alone, production hit 5,743.9 GWh, up from 5,676.9 GWh in July.

Muscat Governorate experienced the most significant surge, with electricity output soaring 204.8% compared to the previous year. Al Dakhiliyah’s growth stood at 44.1%, while Al Wusta’s increased by 8.4%. Electricity production in North Al Batinah, South Al Batinah, and Al Dhahirah rose by 5.5%. Dhofar also saw growth, with an increase of 4.6% during January to August. The figures demonstrate widespread expansion across many regions included in the national data.
Conversely, North Al Sharqiyah and South Al Sharqiyah experienced a combined decline of 16.4% in electricity output. Musandam’s production was 376.0 GWh, indicating no significant change from the same period in 2025. The regional data reveal considerable variation in electricity growth across Oman during this period. The National Centre for Statistics and Information classified these figures as preliminary. The data reflect electricity output through August 2026.
Net Electricity Generation Increases by 4.6%
Oman’s net electricity generation rose 4.6% through August, reaching 36,463.9 GWh compared to 34,871.8 GWh last year. This includes regional purchases by the Oman Power and Water Procurement Company and the Rural Areas Electricity Company. Muscat again led with a 204.4% increase in net production. Al Dakhiliyah grew by 44.2%, while Al Wusta and Dhofar posted gains of 9.1% and 7.6%, respectively. Overall, net output climbed by approximately 1,592.1 GWh from the previous year.
Net electricity production in North Al Batinah, South Al Batinah, and Al Dhahirah increased by 5.4%. Meanwhile, North Al Sharqiyah and South Al Sharqiyah saw a decline of 16.6%. Musandam’s net electricity output was 368.0 GWh, with no significant change from 2025. The regional figures align broadly with the total electricity data, indicating the national net output remained above last year’s level for the first eight months.
Water Production Declines Across Oman
Oman’s water output decreased by 3.5% through August 2026, reaching 330.65 million cubic metres, down from approximately 342.71 million cubic metres during the same period in 2025. Muscat’s water production fell 6.2% to about 128.07 million cubic metres from roughly 136.57 million. Other governorates experienced a 3.4% decline, producing about 149.90 million cubic metres compared to 155.19 million last year.
Dhofar was an exception, with water production rising 3.4% to approximately 52.68 million cubic metres from about 50.94 million the previous year. These latest utility figures highlight contrasting trends: electricity output increased both in total and net measures, whereas overall water production remained below last year’s levels during the same period.
