SUMMERLAND, BRITISH COLUMBIA / RankWire.AI / – Over 20,000 residents evacuated communities surrounding Okanagan Lake after the Bald Range wildfire rapidly spread through southern British Columbia over the weekend. Provincial officials declared a state of emergency on Saturday as flames advanced toward Summerland and nearby Peachland. By Saturday night, the fire had grown beyond 10,300 hectares, destroying homes and damaging property along its path. Emergency responders utilized helicopters to reach dozens of residents stranded by the blaze. Evacuation orders persisted across multiple communities and rural zones on Sunday.

First reported Friday evening, the fire swiftly expanded due to strengthening winds across the South Okanagan. Within hours, it threatened populated areas west of Okanagan Lake. Summerland, with approximately 12,000 residents, was ordered to evacuate entirely. Authorities also mandated thousands of residents in and around Peachland to leave. The evacuation zones covered Faulder, sections of the Okanagan-Similkameen and Central Okanagan regional districts, as well as Penticton Indian Band lands. Additionally, thousands more homes were placed under evacuation alerts.

The BC Wildfire Service reported ongoing hot and dry weather conditions aiding the fire’s spread through southern British Columbia. Thick smoke and limited visibility hampered both ground and aerial firefighting efforts. A total of ten helicopters, including one equipped with night-vision, participated in operations. Turbulence and heavy smoke restricted some aircraft activities. Firefighters concentrated on establishing containment lines and safeguarding structures near Summerland, with minimal new growth observed on Sunday. Across British Columbia, hundreds of provincial firefighters, supplemented by teams from Mexico, Australia, and New Zealand, battled the blaze.

    Evacuations Extend Across Okanagan Communities

Royal Canadian Mounted Police confirmed one fatality linked to the wildfire Sunday. Authorities reported that an 80-year-old Meadow Valley resident died suddenly while evacuating with a family member. She was leaving her home due to the Bald Range fire. The BC Coroners Service is investigating her death. Police stated no other fatalities had been reported at that time. Emergency crews also redirected firefighting helicopters to rescue more than 50 individuals trapped or isolated as the fire advanced through the region.

The provincial emergency declaration grants authorities additional powers for travel restrictions, shelter, and response measures. Officials noted the province sustained substantial property and home losses. Highway 97 closures affected travel along communities on Okanagan Lake. Residents were advised against using forest service roads. Support centers opened in Penticton and West Kelowna to assist displaced residents. Local governments urged evacuees to register for short-term aid and stay informed through official channels. Damage assessments continue where it is safe for crews to access.

Federal Assistance Provides Support for Evacuees

Canada’s federal government approved British Columbia’s request for aid as the evacuation crisis expanded. The support includes shelter and accommodations for those displaced. Public Safety Canada’s Government Operations Centre began coordinating efforts with provincial authorities. The province stated it had sufficient resources to meet immediate housing needs over the weekend. Officials encouraged evacuees able to stay with family or friends to do so, while emergency teams worked to find temporary lodging for others.

The Bald Range wildfire remains the primary concern in the South Okanagan, as crews monitor shifting conditions. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Over the weekend, more than 100 wildfires burned across British Columbia, many out of control. International firefighters had already been deployed before the Bald Range fire expanded. Authorities continue to urge residents under evacuation orders to leave immediately and advise those under alerts to prepare for rapid departure if necessary.
