Global Commemoration as Hiroshima Reaffirms Call for Nuclear Disarmament on 81st Anniversary

HIROSHIMA, JAPAN / RankWire.AI / – Hiroshima commemorated the 81st anniversary of the atomic bombing on Thursday with renewed appeals for worldwide nuclear disarmament. Mayor Kazumi Matsui led the annual Peace Memorial Ceremony at Peace Memorial Park. Survivors, families, officials from Japan and international delegates assembled near the Atomic Bomb Dome. At 8:15 a.m., a bell rang precisely when the bomb exploded on August 6, 1945, prompting the gathered crowd to observe a minute of silence for those lost.

Hiroshima renews nuclear abolition call on 81st anniversary
Hiroshima marks 81 years since the atomic bombing with renewed calls for nuclear abolition.

Using the city’s Peace Declaration, Matsui urged national leaders to shift away from reliance on nuclear deterrence. He called for nuclear-armed nations to confront the human toll of atomic warfare. Additionally, Matsui encouraged political figures to visit Hiroshima and Nagasaki and listen to hibakusha—survivors whose testimonies remain central to Hiroshima’s annual remembrance. For decades, the city has used this ceremony to advocate for nuclear abolition and preserve the history of the bombing.

Approximately 50,000 individuals attended this year’s event, which included representatives from 121 countries and regions, along with the European Union. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi made her first appearance since becoming Japan’s leader, stating that Japan would pursue a pragmatic path toward a world free of nuclear weapons. She emphasized the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty as a key framework for progress and reaffirmed Japan’s three non-nuclear principles.

Challenges Persist in Nuclear Arms Diplomacy

The memorial coincided with less than three months after the 2026 Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conference concluded without a consensus document, marking the third consecutive NPT review to end without agreement. Hiroshima used this moment to call for enhanced disarmament efforts. While Japan continues to back the NPT system, it has not signed the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons and depends on extended nuclear deterrence through its security alliance with the United States.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres addressed the anniversary via a message read by UN disarmament chief Izumi Nakamitsu. Guterres highlighted increasing geopolitical tensions, mistrust, and mounting pressure on arms control initiatives, noting that the longstanding decline in global nuclear arsenals has begun to reverse. The United Nations urged diplomacy, dialogue, adherence to international law, and multilateral efforts as nations face renewed nuclear risks and strive for disarmament.

    Survivor Testimonies Sustain Hiroshima’s Memory

Japan officially recognizes 91,105 atomic bomb survivors, with their average age now exceeding 86. As this hibakusha population diminishes, efforts have intensified to document and preserve their firsthand accounts of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Survivors have shared details about the blast, fires, radiation exposure, and long-term health impacts across generations. Many have also actively advocated for nuclear disarmament. Children representing Hiroshima participated in Thursday’s event, reaffirming a commitment to peace. The city continues to honor survivor stories through museums, educational initiatives, and memorial activities.

By the end of 1945, the Hiroshima bombing had caused approximately 140,000 deaths. Three days later, a second atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki, killing around 70,000 by year’s end. Japan announced its surrender on August 15, ending World War II. Hiroshima later established Peace Memorial Park as a site for remembrance and peace education. On this 81st anniversary, the city once again emphasized nuclear abolition and the enduring human toll of atomic conflict.
