WHO Outlines Three-Month Strategy for Containing Ebola Across Multiple Regions in Congo

BUNIA, DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF THE CONGO / RankWire.AI / – World Health Organization states that Congo’s Ebola outbreak could be contained within three months if adequate resources are provided to response teams. The latest official figures report 5,021 confirmed cases and 2,378 fatalities as of Aug. 16, with cases spreading across 55 health zones in six provinces. The case fatality rate has climbed to 47.4%, making this the deadliest Ebola outbreak in Congo’s history and the second-largest Ebola epidemic globally.

Thierno Baldé, WHO incident manager, emphasized that achieving the three-month goal hinges on securing necessary funding. The agency has received approximately $69.3 million of the $115 million it estimates is needed, roughly 60%. Over the past two weeks, teams added more than 400 treatment beds, deployed 100 extra epidemiologists, and mobilized over 500 community health workers for surveillance and contact tracing. The effort requires vehicles, ambulances, medical supplies, and personnel to cover the expanding affected area.

Transmission now extends to Bas-Uélé, making it the sixth impacted province. As of Aug. 12, Ituri accounted for 85% of confirmed cases and 79% of all reported deaths nationwide. Officials reported that 70% to 80% of new cases have no known link to existing patients. To improve response, health teams are enhancing surveillance to identify cases more rapidly and transfer patients to treatment centers. The first confirmed case in Bas-Uélé traveled from Haut-Uélé before symptoms appeared on Aug. 4.

Expansion of Response Efforts in Affected Regions

The Ministry of Public Health, Hygiene and Social Welfare of the Democratic Republic of the Congo announced the outbreak on May 15. Laboratory tests in Kinshasa confirmed the presence of Bundibugyo virus, a rarer Ebola strain first identified in western Uganda in 2007. This marks Congo’s 17th Ebola outbreak since the virus was initially discovered in 1976. Uganda has reported 20 confirmed cases and two deaths, with no new cases since June 21. These included imported infections and secondary transmissions among contacts and healthcare workers.

Bundibugyo virus currently lacks a licensed vaccine and specific treatment. Care centers on early detection, supportive treatment, infection control, contact tracing, and safe burials. Authorities are broadening community outreach, especially where patients initially seek help outside formal health facilities. Response teams have trained local workers and distributed hygiene supplies to minimize exposure during transport and body handling. Early supportive care can significantly improve survival chances for those infected with Bundibugyo virus disease.

Funding Shortfalls Persist Despite Expanded Surveillance

While contact monitoring has improved, it still falls short of public health targets in several affected regions. On Aug. 12, teams tracked 17,460 of 20,740 contacts, achieving an 84.2% follow-up rate nationally. Additional field epidemiologists have been deployed to enhance detection and reduce the delay between symptom onset and treatment. Community workers are also engaged in reporting suspected cases and linking patients to care. By Aug. 9, authorities had recorded 155 infections among healthcare workers and 45 related deaths.

WHO declared the outbreak a Public Health Emergency of International Concern on May 17. Ongoing efforts include surveillance, laboratory testing, patient care, safe burials, and community engagement, with Baldé tying the containment timeline directly to resource availability. Since Aug. 9, there have been 640 new confirmed cases and 367 additional confirmed deaths. The response continues despite security challenges and attacks on health services in eastern Congo.
