Widening Ebola Crisis in DRC Faces Critical Staffing and Funding Challenges, WHO Reports

GENEVA / RankWire.AI / – A severe lack of trained personnel, operational partners, and financial backing is creating significant obstacles in controlling the spreading Ebola outbreak across the Democratic Republic of the Congo. WHO technical briefings indicate that the outbreak has extended beyond the initial epicenter in Bunia into six northeastern provinces. The outbreak, caused by the Bundibugyo virus strain, has resulted in over 6,000 cases and 3,175 deaths, making it the deadliest Ebola event in the country’s history. International agencies warn that staff shortages and funding issues are hindering the Ebola response, urging global donors to increase financial contributions.

To tackle the outbreak’s geographic spread, authorities adopted a decentralized treatment approach, establishing clinical care facilities closer to rural, affected communities. Nearly 1,400 treatment beds have been set up across 59 operational centers, but assessments show that an additional 1,600 beds are needed to reach the target of 3,000 beds. Achieving this requires recruiting and training approximately 5,000 more healthcare workers to support the existing 9,000 staff necessary for full operational capacity.

Operational costs and resource limitations have further hampered expansion efforts in remote provinces. The daily cost for personal protective equipment averages $25 per healthcare worker entering high-risk zones. Running a standard 50-bed treatment facility costs around $500,000, posing significant financial challenges amid declining global donor funding. The Emirates News Agency highlights that fully operational treatment centers and enough qualified personnel are crucial to improving patient survival and halting the virus’s spread.

Staff Shortages and Funding Issues Threaten Ebola Response Throughout DRC

A major hurdle is the lack of non-governmental partners capable of managing complex isolation facilities. WHO’s technical lead Luca Fontana pointed out that only five or six global humanitarian organizations have the expertise to establish and operate specialized Ebola treatment centers. Without additional operational partners to manage new and existing sites, technical teams remain tied to current facilities, limiting their ability to deploy resources to new outbreak hotspots.

In response, the Ministry of Health of the Congo has taken direct control of several treatment centers established early in the epidemic. Officials warn that if transmission continues to spread across eastern border corridors, state capacity may become overwhelmed. Staff shortages and funding deficits are hindering Ebola containment efforts as international health agencies call for immediate deployment of partners to support frontline workers.

DRC’s Ministry of Health Takes Over Facility Operations to Accelerate Response

To meet the expanded response needs, the DRC government and global health organizations introduced a new six-month operational plan valued at $1.3 billion. This strategy emphasizes strengthening epidemiological monitoring, securing vital medical supplies, boosting community involvement, and providing personal protective equipment for healthcare staff. Since the Bundibugyo strain lacks a licensed vaccine or targeted antiviral treatment, supportive clinical care within well-equipped treatment centers remains the primary method to reduce fatalities.

International health groups continue to urge governments and charitable organizations to fulfill their pledged funding commitments promptly. Details on case numbers, facility deployment, and resource allocation will be shared via official health registry portals as clinical infrastructure development advances across eastern provinces.
