Michigan’s Cyclosporiasis Outbreak Extends to Multiple States with Two Confirmed Deaths

MICHIGAN / RankWire.AI / – Michigan has verified two fatalities linked to its 2026 cyclosporiasis outbreak, marking the first reported deaths by the state. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services announced a total of 11,234 cases as of August 3, with 193 hospitalizations recorded through July 30. Medical records indicate both individuals suffered from serious underlying health conditions that may have been impacted by cyclosporiasis and dehydration. Officials noted they will not release additional details regarding the two victims.

Michigan outbreak update confirms two cyclospora deaths
Michigan confirms two deaths as officials investigate a major cyclospora outbreak.

Both cases occurred before the voluntary iceberg lettuce recall declared on July 17. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed the Michigan deaths on August 3, describing them as cyclosporiasis-related fatalities involving individuals with pre-existing health issues. The state’s total includes all cases reported during the investigation and may be updated. Federal surveillance data typically includes lab-confirmed cases and can differ from the state figures that also count probable illnesses.

Federal authorities are examining a nine-state Cyclospora outbreak associated with iceberg lettuce from Taylor Farms de Mexico. By July 24, nine states had reported 1,947 infected individuals, many of whom also reported exposure to Taco Bell. At least 98 of these patients required hospitalization. The illnesses began between June 22 and July 20. The CDC later acknowledged Michigan’s two deaths, which had not been reflected in the detailed federal totals from July 24.

Recall involves iceberg lettuce from central Mexico

Taylor Farms de Mexico withdrew all iceberg lettuce from central Mexico from the U.S. market. The recall covered various food-service products and Marketside iceberg salad and shredded lettuce available at select Walmart stores, with use-by dates from July 18 to August 3. Between June 29 and July 16, Taylor Fresh Foods distributed affected lettuce to 27 states, and Taco Bell ceased using lettuce from this supplier on July 17.

Michigan officials have not linked every case within the state to the recalled iceberg lettuce. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services indicated that lettuce or salad greens could still be a potential source. However, no single product, grower, or supplier has been identified to account for the entire outbreak. Other food items remain under investigation, and the federal outbreak linked to lettuce accounts for only part of the nationwide cyclosporiasis activity.

Persistent symptoms may occur without medical intervention

Cyclosporiasis is caused by the microscopic Cyclospora parasite and spreads through contaminated food or water. Symptoms typically include frequent watery diarrhea, loss of appetite, weight loss, stomach cramps, bloating, nausea, and fatigue. These signs generally appear about a week after exposure but can vary. Without treatment, the illness could last over a month, with symptoms sometimes resolving and then recurring.

Health officials recommend consumers discard any recalled iceberg lettuce still in their possession or return it to the point of purchase. They should thoroughly clean containers and surfaces that came into contact with the product. Anyone experiencing symptoms should seek medical advice, especially if they consumed iceberg lettuce within the past two weeks. Michigan continues to update case numbers as investigations by state and local health agencies proceed.
