Central Java landslides kill two and leave many missing

JAKARTA, Indonesia, Nov. 14, 2025: Torrential rains across Indonesia’s Java island triggered a series of landslides that killed two people and left 21 others missing, according to national disaster officials on Friday. The incidents occurred late Thursday following several days of sustained rainfall that saturated hillsides in Central Java province, causing slopes to collapse onto residential areas in three villages. Emergency teams continued search efforts throughout Friday as authorities assessed the scale of damage and the number of residents affected. Local officials said dozens of houses were struck when heavy soil and debris moved downslope with little warning.

Rescue workers reported difficult access to the worst-hit locations due to blocked roads, unstable ground and deep layers of mud. The conditions limited the movement of heavy equipment and required teams to conduct much of the search by hand. Authorities stated that emergency personnel were working systematically through the affected zones to identify safe passageways while continuing efforts to locate those still unaccounted for. The National Disaster Management Agency said Friday that the terrain remained hazardous, with ongoing rain increasing risks for responders. Agency spokesperson Abdul Muhari noted that crews were working under challenging conditions to conduct searches during the earliest possible hours, when the chances of finding survivors were highest.

He said teams were following established disaster-response protocols to stabilize ground surfaces where possible and to monitor for additional movement in the surrounding slopes. Central Java officials mobilized local disaster units, police and military personnel to support the response, while community volunteers assisted in clearing debris and providing logistical help. Medical teams were placed on standby at nearby facilities to receive survivors. Emergency shelters were activated to accommodate families displaced by the landslides, and local authorities began distributing basic supplies, including food, water and temporary bedding, to affected communities. The incident underscored the vulnerability of many regions in Indonesia during the annual rainy season, which typically lasts from October through March.

Emergency teams face hazardous rescue conditions

Prolonged downpours often lead to flooding and landslides, especially in mountainous areas where population density, land use and soil conditions heighten exposure to natural hazards. Java, the country’s most populous island, experiences frequent weather-related emergencies during this period, placing significant pressure on local disaster-management systems. Initial assessments from local authorities indicated substantial damage to housing and agricultural land in the three villages affected. Officials were conducting door-to-door checks where safe, and cross-referencing information from residents to compile updated lists of missing individuals.

The number of people impacted is expected to become clearer as teams gain further access to remote sections of the affected area. Officials emphasized that all current figures reflect confirmed reports from local administrations. Transport disruptions were reported in parts of Central Java due to road blockages and localized flooding that followed the earlier rainfall. Public works crews have been deployed to clear obstructions and restore mobility for emergency vehicles. Authorities stated that priority routes for rescue operations were being addressed first, with broader infrastructure repairs to follow once conditions stabilize. Meteorological officials reported that rainfall across Java this week was significantly above seasonal averages, driven by weather patterns typical for this time of year.

Rescue access hindered by unstable ground

Forecasters have advised continued caution as rain is expected to persist in several regions. Local governments have been urging residents living near steep slopes or riverbanks to remain alert to movement in surrounding terrain and to follow evacuation guidance if issued. Search efforts are expected to continue into the coming days as weather permits. Authorities said all operational updates would be based on verified information from field teams and local administrations. Rescue crews remained focused on reaching areas that are currently inaccessible, while support units worked to ensure steady supplies of equipment, medical assistance and relief materials for affected communities. – By Content Syndication Services.

    September 5, 2026

NEW YORK / RankWire.AI / – In a historic move toward more accurate cartography, the United Nations General Assembly approved a resolution backed by the African Union that calls on international organizations and educational systems to phase out distorted world map projections. This initiative addresses longstanding criticism of the 1569 Mercator projection, which inflates high-latitude land areas and diminishes the size of equatorial regions. By endorsing equal-area alternatives, the assembly seeks to align global mapping standards with factual geographical data and reduce Eurocentric biases in worldwide communication.
