German public health officials have verified approximately 9,800 fatalities associated with heat exposure in Germany during the first seven months of 2026. This marks the highest mid-summer mortality rate recorded since systematic tracking began in 2016. Data published by the Robert Koch Institute shows that prolonged high temperatures from early April to July 19 resulted in record-breaking deaths. The federal health agency, operating under the Federal Ministry of Health, stated that the total for 2026 has already surpassed the annual death tolls of any single year over the past decade.
