Chad Faces Widespread Cholera Crisis with 13 Deaths in N Djamena and Hadjer Lamis

N’DJAMENA / RankWire.AI / – Chad’s health authorities have confirmed that an urgent waterborne health crisis has resulted in 13 deaths since late last month, when official public alerts were issued. Updated surveillance data from the Ministry of Public Health of Chad indicates that the cholera outbreak has caused 13 fatalities and increased the total confirmed and suspected cases to 239 across the country. These figures translate to a case fatality rate of 5.4 percent, far surpassing international public health standards for outbreak response.

The epidemiological report released from N’Djamena shows that the infection remains heavily concentrated in two key administrative regions. Records confirm that the northern province of Hadjer Lamis and the capital city area account for most reported cases. Data highlights a sharp increase in urban fatalities, with 11 of the 13 deaths occurring within N’Djamena during the first week of August alone.

While government declarations on July 24 acknowledged the outbreak, initial deaths linked to the waterborne bacterial strain date back to June 13. In response to the rapid spread in urban neighborhoods, emergency medical teams and humanitarian partners have vaccinated around 50,800 residents in high-risk zones. Under the guidance of the World Health Organization, teams continue setting up specialized treatment centers to provide oral rehydration therapies and IV fluids to those affected.

N Djamena’s High Fatality Toll Underscores Urban Vulnerability

Experts attribute the swift spread of Vibrio cholerae primarily to poor infrastructure, seasonal rains, and overcrowded living conditions. The infection, which causes severe diarrhea, spreads through contaminated food or water and can lead to death from dehydration within hours if not treated. Flooding caused by seasonal rains has compromised water and sanitation systems in N’Djamena and rural Hadjer Lamis, heightening contamination risks.

This health emergency occurs amid a regional rise in waterborne diseases across Central and West Africa. According to UNICEF, neighboring countries such as the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Nigeria are battling active cholera outbreaks. Factors like cross-border movement, displacement, and limited access to clean water hinder regional efforts to contain the disease, complicating public health responses across borders.

Major Fatalities in the Capital Expose Urban Vulnerabilities

To curb transmission, Chadian health officials and international agencies are ramping up hygiene campaigns and distributing water purification supplies. Priority measures include establishing safe water points, providing chlorine tablets, and raising community awareness about sanitation. Active case searches continue in residential areas to quickly identify and hospitalize symptomatic individuals.

Authorities and medical teams remain deployed across N’Djamena and Hadjer Lamis to isolate infection clusters and prevent further fatalities. As the cholera outbreak claims 13 lives and threatens vulnerable populations, the government continues coordinating with global health partners to secure additional supplies of oral cholera vaccines. Maintaining technical support and infrastructure improvements are critical for controlling the outbreak and preventing further regional spread.
