Malaysia Enhances El Niño Preparedness for Drier Seasons

KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA / RankWire.AI / – Malaysia has stepped up its efforts to prepare for increasingly hot and dry conditions as El Niño gains strength across the Pacific. The Alliance for a Safe Community emphasized the importance of early interventions to safeguard water resources, public health, agriculture, and vulnerable ecosystems. Chairman Lee Lam Thye called on government bodies, businesses, and local communities to work together in their response. He highlighted that prompt actions could lessen the burden on essential services during extended periods of heat and low rainfall.

Malaysia steps up El Niño response for dry months
Early El Niño action focuses on water security, heat safety and haze prevention.

According to MetMalaysia’s assessment on July 14, moderate El Niño conditions are currently present. The agency forecasts that this climate pattern will persist until at least April 2027. Sea surface temperatures in the Niño 3.4 zone are currently 1.3 degrees Celsius above normal. Additionally, MetMalaysia anticipates intensified conditions from October to December 2026, with the potential for the event to reach very strong levels during that timeframe.

The broader weather outlook for Malaysia indicates decreased rainfall in several regions during the latter half of 2026. The most significant drops are expected in July and August, coinciding with the southwest monsoon. Areas such as southern Peninsular Malaysia, parts of Sarawak, and eastern Sabah are forecasted to experience reduced rainfall. Such dry conditions could elevate the risk of fires and haze, especially during open burning activities. Nonetheless, heavy rain and thunderstorms may still occur during the monsoon season.

    Water security takes priority

The National Disaster Management Agency has ramped up measures to address hot and dry weather. Since February, authorities have completed seven cloud seeding operations involving 27 flights across Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah, and Sarawak. Plans for three additional cloud seeding series are also in place to boost rainfall and sustain reservoir levels. Fire and environmental teams have been instructed to monitor 83 locations identified as high risk for open burning. These initiatives form part of the government’s comprehensive response to El Niño.

Water authorities are tasked with inspecting dams for urgent repairs and evaluating additional groundwater sources for tube wells. In parallel, health and education sectors are enhancing guidance for schools and vulnerable populations. The safety coalition also recommended reducing water loss from aging pipes, expanding storage capacity, optimizing irrigation practices, providing technical assistance to farmers, and enforcing stricter regulations against forest and peatland fires. Authorities continue to oversee water reserves and monitor agricultural health.

    Health agencies expand public advisories

Lee identified elderly individuals, young children, outdoor workers, and those with chronic illnesses as priority groups. He urged increased public awareness campaigns on water conservation, heat safety, and fire prevention. Residents are encouraged to utilize the myCuaca app for localized weather forecasts, alerts, and official updates. Meanwhile, government agencies keep track of air quality, drought levels, fire risks, and temperature trends. Educational institutions and workplaces can leverage this data to make informed safety decisions daily.

The most recent international climate report indicates a 97% probability that El Niño will continue into early 2027. It also estimates an 81% chance of a very strong event from October to December. Malaysia’s current preparations encompass water management, cloud seeding, health communication, fire prevention, and weather monitoring efforts. The government maintains coordination across national and state agencies, advising the public to stay updated through verified sources and conserve water during dry spells.

UN Highlights Growing Global Child Violence Risks as 2030 Goals Fall Short

    September 1, 2026

Child protection efforts face mounting pressure from conflict, climate and digital abuse. The report states that nearly 19% of children globally now reside in conflict zones, a significant rise from approximately 10% in the 1990s. By the end of 2024, conflict and violence had displaced 48.8 million children worldwide, nearly tripling the figure of about 17 million recorded in 2010. This includes refugee and asylum-seeking children, along with millions displaced within their own countries due to violence and conflict. Climate-related hazards are further compounding risks for children worldwide. Almost half of all children, or 1.1 billion, are exposed to at least three overlapping climate threats. Nearly every child faces at least one such danger, according to UNICEF’s climate risk assessment for 2026. Over 4 million children are threatened by as many as six concurrent hazards, including drought, extreme heat, heatwaves, floods, fires, tropical storms, and sand and dust storms. Digital dangers intensify child protection issues The UN assessment also highlights how digital spaces have expanded the range of threats against children. Roughly one in three internet users worldwide is under 18. Annually, over 300 million children experience online sexual exploitation and abuse, per UN data. During the past year, at least 1.2 million children reported that artificial intelligence had transformed their images into sexually explicit deepfakes. Additional risks include cyberbullying, fraud, identity theft, trafficking, and
